Undergraduate degrees will no longer count towards specialty training applications
The recruitment process for specialty training is to change from 2023, with undergraduate degrees including intercalated degrees which are awarded as masters no longer counting towards applications.The updated 2023 application scoring matrix used for internal medicine training (IMT) and physician higher specialty training recruitment was announced by NHS IMT Recruitment.1 The change follows a ruling by the Medical and Dental Recruitment and Selection2 (MDRS) Programme Board, which said a different approach was needed to tackle the inequity of access to these opportunities because of financial implications and some medical schools not offering intercalated study.The announcement prompted a mixed reaction, with some saying that it would level the playing field and others arguing it would do little to reduce inequalities in access to funding for medical students.While NHS IMT Recruitment is the first branch to implement this change, the ruling applies to all specialties and is not specific to physicians.Health Education…
