STAT Plus: Antibiotic resistance in food-producing animals surges in low- and middle-income countries
As concern mounts over the use of medically important antibiotics given to food-producing livestock, a new analysis finds that antimicrobial resistance in these animals is rising around the world, especially in China and India.
From 2000 to 2018, the proportion of antibiotics where resistance was greater than 50% has increased substantially in all three animal groups. Specifically, resistance more than doubled in chickens, nearly tripled in pigs and nearly doubled in cattle, according to the paper, which was published in Science.
