Gambleaware: what does “independence” from industry really mean?

The charity Gambleaware says on their website that they are “wholly independent.” They make grants for “research and evaluation to improve knowledge of what works in prevention” and “provide information to help people make informed decisions about their gambling.” But how is the charity funded? They “ask all those who profit from the gambling industry in Great Britain, whether or not they hold a licence from the Gambling Commission, to donate a minimum of 0.1% of their annual Gross Gambling Yield (GGY) (the difference between the money players bet and the money they win) directly to GambleAware.” They aim to increase this to 1% in increments in coming years.
