Scotland passes bill making it easier to legally change gender

A controversial new law that makes it easier for people to change their gender has been approved in Scotland, after the longest ever debate in the Scottish parliament. More than 150 amendments to the Gender Recognition Reform Bill were discussed over three days but almost all were rejected, with the original bill surviving practically intact.It means that people applying to change their gender no longer need a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria and can instead “self-identify.” The minimum age for applying for a gender recognition certificate (GRC) drops from 18 to 16, and anyone applying needs only to live in their acquired gender for three months (six months for 16 and 17 year olds) before becoming eligible, as opposed to two years at present.Supporters of the change say it is intended to make the process of applying for a GRC quicker and less intrusive, but some women’s groups have campaigned…
