GMC needs to take a more proactive role in preventing harm and suicide in doctors under investigation

In the reference we quoted, 29 doctors died while under investigation by the General Medical Council and five were confirmed as suicides or suspected suicides.1 2 These are for deaths between 2018 and 2020. We confused the figure with data from a GMC report in 2014 which showed that between 2005 and 2013, 28 doctors died by suicide or suspected suicide while undergoing GMC investigation.3 So, since 2005 when the GMC started collecting these data, a total of 33 doctors have died by suicide or suspected suicide while under investigation.It is worth pointing out that being under regulatory or disciplinary processes increases the risk of mental illness. Investigation by the GMC is probably a risk factor for both depression and suicide.
