Monkeypox: UK to run out of vaccine doses by next week

The UK’s vaccination programme to protect against monkeypox is to be paused until new stocks arrive in late September, although a small number of doses are being reserved for post-exposure prophylaxis.The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said its initial delivery of 50 000 doses of smallpox vaccine will all be allocated by the end of next week. There are global problems with supply because of vaccine availability and the time needed to produce more vaccines.A further batch of 100 000 doses has been ordered and are to arrive in September. UKHSA said it is “working with the manufacturer to expedite delivery as early as possible.”As of 10 August, around 27 000 people have been vaccinated by the NHS and in sexual health services in England, including 25 325 gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.
