26 Weeks Pregnant

You are reaching the end of the second trimester, which means the home stretch is almost in sight. But, of course, with it comes an ever-growing stomach and increasing aches and pains, and you will begin to be less mobile. While it can be hard to experience some of these changes, remember they are temporary, and your baby will soon be arriving.

Your baby now measures about 23cm from head to bottom, weighs about 820gm, and by this stage of your pregnancy, they can hear, see and taste. The baby starts to develop fat stores under the skin and also some muscle. The baby’s defining features, like their nose and mouth, are becoming more apparent.

What You May Feel

You may have heard of a glucose screening test taken between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, which checks for gestational diabetes. Your midwife or doctor will explain the option of undertaking this test… If you decide to go ahead, this test involves you fasting beforehand and then drinking a liquid that contains glucose. Blood is taken before the drink, one hour after and then again two hours later. If it is found that you do have gestational diabetes, your midwife or doctor will carefully explain the implications of this. However, treatment includes blood sugar monitoring, eating healthily, exercise and, possibly, if your blood sugar is too high, medication.

Tips when you are 26 Weeks Pregnant

If you opt for the glucose screening test, preparation is key. The test takes two hours, so if you have other children, it is a good idea to ask someone to mind them. Take a book or something to watch during your appointment, so it takes your mind off things and makes the time pass more quickly… As with any test offered to you in pregnancy, we encourage you to do some research and weigh up all your options before giving your consent.
