Opinion: Jason Karlawish and an Alzheimer’s caregiver on dementia’s ripple effect
In this week’s “First Opinion Podcast,” I speak with Alzheimer’s expert Jason Karlawish, director of Penn’s Memory Center, about his recent First Opinion, “The long, exhausting reach of dementia care.” We were joined by Richard Bartholomew, the husband and caretaker of one of his patients.
They share the isolating, all-encompassing experience of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other type of dementia, with insight into the relationship between caregivers and clinicians. The conversation covered how diseases like Alzheimer’s and Covid-19 ramify to affect more than just those they strike, and how caregivers shouldn’t be thought of as typical hospital visitors, but as essential members of a care team.
