STAT Plus: MacKenzie Scott, with a massive Amazon fortune, emerges as a public health philanthropist
You may not know the name MacKenzie Scott – the author just started going by her new name this week, after all — but you should: She’s one of the richest people on the planet and is emerging as a significant donor in the world of public health.
Scott, who went by MacKenzie Bezos while she was married to Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos, has donated more than $128 million to public health nonprofits in recent months, she announced on Medium on Tuesday. (She said she also gave away another $1.5 billion to other causes.) By way of comparison, Scott’s public health donations amount to almost exactly as much as the philanthropic vehicle funded by Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his spouse, the pediatrician Priscilla Chan, spent last year on all of its science grants.
