Jenni West’s job is to spot innovative technology that improves people’s lives. As associate director for digital change in England’s National Health Service, she sees a lot of new ideas. When a small technology company tried to pitch a tool that would help people with dementia navigate the nursing homes where they live and become a little more independent, she was interested, but not for long.

“We showed it to a patient panel and they tore it to pieces,” West recalled. “They told us, ‘This isn’t going to work … even in the video you showed, the patient crashed into a wall.’”
