High-Processed Diets Cause Weight Gain

Eating ultra-processed foods caused more calories to be consumed than when eating a minimally processed diet, according to researchers at the National Institutes of Health. The small study of 20 healthy adults (10 males, 10 females) ate an ultra-processed diet and a minimally processed diet in random order for two weeks each, totaling one month. Both diets had the same number of calories, sugars, fiber, fat, and carbohydrates, and participants could eat as much or little as they wanted. Those on the ultra-processed diet ate about 500 calories more per day and gained an average of two pounds, compared to those on the other diet, who lost two pounds.
