Ice Cream Treats

On a hot, humid day, a cold ice cream bar can really hit the spot. The great thing about ice cream bars and sandwiches is the automatic portion control. There’s no measuring or scooping out of a carton…you can simply grab one and enjoy! However, even within their controlled portions, the nutrient profile from one treat to the next varies greatly. In addition, new to the market are a variety of dairy-free options as well as “healthier” protein-enriched choices. But are these new types of frozen treats healthier? How do they compare to traditional bars and sandwiches? Can any of the many types of ice cream treats be a part of a healthy eating plan?

Most of the ice cream treats, whether dairy or non-dairy are similar in their nutrient breakdown. However, a fairly new option is ice cream treats with extra protein. The benefit is that protein takes longer to digest than the usual carbs of which most ice cream treats are made up. That means you’ll stay feeling fuller longer after enjoying your treat. This can help prevent binging and cravings.

Helpful Hints. When you want to cool off with a creamy frozen treat, keep these tips in mind.

  • “Mini”-mize it. Many companies are beginning to offer their beloved treats in smaller sizes. This is a great option because you get the exact flavor you’re craving, just less of it.
  • Watch the alcohol. Yup, I said alcohol. Some manufacturers cut the calories and sugar by using sugar alcohols as sweeteners. The bad news is, taking in large amounts of these can cause digestive issues. Be sure to check the Nutrient Facts Panel and keep your serving size in check.
  • How often. Keep in mind, no matter how “healthy” some of these treats claim to be, they are just that, treats. They are still sources of added sugar, as well as extra fat and calories with little to no nutritional benefits in most. Feel free to enjoy them, but on occasion vs. a regular basis.
