(Naturalhealth365) The insertion of a stent – a tiny mesh tube – is a common procedure for opening up arteries that have been blocked by plaque. Warning: Conventionally-trained doctors are not well-educated about the dangers of heavy metal toxicity
According to Dr. Wolfson, mainstream medicine currently ignores a clear and present danger – the fact that heavy metal exposure presents a grave threat to heart health.
The major “culprits” – mercury, arsenic, lead, cadmium and aluminum (not technically a “heavy metal”) – interfere with cardiovascular function, causing stress, oxidation and inflammation throughout the entire system. (An increasing body of evidence identifies Inflammation as being at the root of many chronic degenerative diseases, including cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and – notably – heart disease).
Dr. Wolfson notes that elevated levels of toxic heavy metals lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular problems – including coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrillation.
In addition to causing oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction, toxic heavy metals can deplete levels of glutathione – the body’s most important antioxidant – and decrease levels of beneficial nitric oxide.
Disturbingly, toxic metals can lurk in everyday products – for instance, aluminum is found in deodorant, antacids, vaccines and even baby formula, while mercury, a known neurotoxin, can contaminate seafood. (As for mercury-based “silver” dental fillings, Dr. Wolfson describes them, bluntly, as “a massive dose of poison.”)
In addition to vigilance against heavy metal-laden personal care products, foods and cookware, Dr. Wolfson recommends the use of high-quality filters for indoor air and drinking water.

Heart-healthy foods can ramp up vital nitric oxide levels to prevent heart disease
For combating heart disease, an organic, gluten – and soy-free Paleo diet can be the first line of defense.
Heart-healthy fats, such as the monounsaturated fat in avocados and walnuts, can help to balance cholesterol, while healthy amounts of Brassica (cruciferous) vegetables offer up disease-fighting polyphenols.
Adding healthy spices (packed with antioxidant protection) and decreasing the use of sodium are two additional, and vital, steps toward better cardiovascular health.
Dr. Wolfson also advises specific foods known for increasing levels of nitric oxide, a vasodilator that promotes blood flow and heart health.
Dark chocolate (or even better: raw cacao) helps to create nitric oxide in the body, while oranges and other citrus fruits contain healthy amounts of vitamin C to protect nitric oxide molecules from free radical damage.
Walnuts are high in L-arginine, which is vital for the creation of nitric oxide. Similarly, watermelon is a good source of the amino acid L-citrulline – also essential to nitric oxide production.
