Western Diet May Increase Risk of Alzheimer’s
The most important risk factors for developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are connected to diet, research shows. Eating a Western diet, characterized by the consumption of three of the most important dietary risk factors for AD—meat, sweets, and high-fat dairy products—may increase the risk of this most common type of dementia, which affects 42 million people globally. People living in the U.S. have about a 4 percent risk of developing AD, potentially due in part to the Western diet, which includes a large amount of meat consumption, researchers say. Reducing meat consumption could significantly reduce risk of the disease.
