Watching “Action” Shows Leads to Overeating

Research increasingly shows an association between television watching, higher food consumption, and a sedentary lifestyle. According to a study from Cornell University, the type of movie and TV show watched may influence the amount viewers eat, and action programs could lead people to eat twice as much as when watching other types of programs.

In the study, participants were given candy, cookies, carrots and grapes for TV snacks, and watched 20 minutes of an action movie, a talk show, or the same action movie without sound. Those who watched the action movie ate 98 percent more (354 calories) than those watching the talk show (215 calories), and those who watched the action movie without sound ate 36 percent (314 calories) more than the talk show viewers.

According to the study, the fast-paced programs are so engaging that they distract viewers, making them less aware of how much they’re eating.
