Ultra-Processed Foods Contribute Half of Calories

Ultra-processed foods, such as sodas, candy, packaged baked goods, instant soups, and processed meat products make up more than half of the total energy intake and contribute the highest amount of added sugar to the American diet, according to a new study. Researchers evaluated data from 9,317 participants in the 2009-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and found that ultra-processed foods provide nearly 60 percent of total energy intake and 90 percent of added sugars intake in the diet. Of the individuals who ate the most ultra-processed foods, 80 percent exceeded the daily recommended intake for added sugars (10 percent of total calories) in the diet.
